Morocco was jolted by a rare and immensely powerful earthquake late Friday night, leaving more than 600 people dead and a trail of destruction that stretched from remote villages nestled in the Atlas Mountains to the historic and vibrant city of Marrakech.

The earthquake, registering a powerful 6.8 on the Richter scale, is the strongest ever recorded in this mountainous region. Unfortunately, the number of people who have been hurt or lost their lives is expected to increase as rescue operations continue.
